Caitlin Hawks races down the line on day one of the 2017 Stawell Gift.

NATHALIA’S Caitlin Hawks has raced into the semi-finals of the 2017 Women’s Stawell Gift after a convincing win in yesterday's Heat 14.

Starting from 8.5m – the middle of the field – Hawks capitalised on an excellent start to win in 13.960 (adjusted).

She was the only runner in her heat to break 14 seconds.

By the time the 15 women’s heats were over Hawks had finished seventh-fastest out of more than 100 starters over the 120m distance.

Her semi-final will be run on Monday morning before the afternoon’s final, which is worth $40,000 to the winner.

The outstanding young runner – a hurdles specialist – was the fastest qualifier for the semi-finals in 2016 but did not make the six-runner final.
