Girgarre man was caught without licence — twice

April 22, 2017

A GIRGARRE man who was twice caught driving while unlicensed must now pay nearly $1000 in fines.

Robert Spiteri, 51, faced Echuca Magistrates Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to unlicensed driving and driving an unregistered vehicle.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Karl Mannes said Spiteri was first caught in November 2015 while driving along Johnston St in Collingwood.

After initially telling police his name was Joe Spiteri, the court was told the man then provided his correct name and checks revealed he was unlicensed.

He was then caught a second time — on Christmas Eve last year — but instead of a car was picked up riding a motorcycle through Girgarre.

Police said when he was stopped it was discovered the motorcycle without not carrying any registration plates.

The court heard Spiteri had struggled with things in general after his parents died within eight weeks of each other.

Magistrate John Murphy convicted Spiteri, fined him $800 and ordered him to pay a further $119 in statutory costs.

‘‘Don’t go driving while you’re unlicensed or you could go inside (jail),’’ Mr Murphy said.
