MOAMA Movers, a local walking group, is this week being recognised as part of National Volunteer Week.

The Heart Foundation, in partnership with Bendigo Regional YMCA, congratulated David Hinton, the Moama Movers volunteer organiser for the past four years, for his time spent ensuring the free walking group remains an integral part of the community.

David said Heart Foundation Walking groups were perfect for people of all ages and fitness levels.

‘‘It’s especially good for people who aren’t currently active and want to change that,’’ he said.

“People are advised to do moderate exercise for 30 minutes, five times a week, to see health benefits.

‘‘Walking groups are an easy, enjoyable and affordable way to achieve that.”

The Moama Movers from Echuca-Moama walk every Thursday at 8:30am from the Moama Soundshell and always welcome new walkers.

Part of the thousands of volunteers who assist the Heart Foundation Walking program nationally, primary and secondary Walk Organisers collectively contribute more than 1.14 million hours of their valuable time each year to making their communities healthier.

Heart Foundation chief executive Professor John Kelly said the time volunteered was the equivalent of more than 151,000 working days.

“Walk Organisers are provided with free training, together with a range of resources to start and maintain their group,” John said.
