CAMPASPE Shire Council has adopted its strategy to guide the ongoing development of retail and commercial centres in Echuca.
Mayor Adrian Weston said the Echuca Commercial Strategy 2017 would set an inspiring vision for the long-term economic prosperity of Echuca, the shire and wider region.
He said Echuca’s CBD would be a leading example of a regional centre, renowned for its ‘experience’ offered to residents and visitors, its high level of amenity and sense of place, product offering and customer service.
‘‘The significance of Echuca as the retailing, business, entertainment and civic heart of Campaspe is widely recognised, and the Echuca Commercial Strategy will help create an environment that stimulates and nurtures a diverse and thriving economy well into the future,’’ Cr Weston said.
‘‘It will achieve this by providing a framework for revitalising existing commercial areas and a strategic planning basis for the development of well-located and high quality activity centres and commercial areas going forward.
‘‘Importantly, the strategy will assist council in its decision-making process when considering proposals for new commercial developments in Echuca.’’
Cr Weston said the strategy would support the continued expansion of all Echuca’s commercial areas, planning for the growth of Echuca West.
‘‘And demand for new food and beverage floor space is a key priority,’’ he said.
‘‘Providing accessible and convenient grocery shopping opportunities across all commercial centres not only reduces travel costs for residents, it reduces reliance on one centre for day-to-day shopping, thereby minimising overcrowding and improving sustainability of the urban area.
‘‘Importantly, the development of future centres must be appropriately managed to avoid any possible negative impact on the Echuca CBD.’’
