THE dairying community of Cohuna has today been named the 2017 LEGENDAIRY Capital of the Murray Region – an accolade that will put the town ‘on the map’ as a LEGENDAIRY community.

Cohuna now joins seven other LEGENDAIRY Capitals from across the country’s dairy regions.

The eight LEGENDAIRY Regional Capitals for 2017 are:

1. Poowong (Gippsland)

2. Cohuna (Murray Region)

3. Hannam Vale (New South Wales)

4. Mount Schank (South Australia)

5. Beaudesert (Subtropical Region)

6. Ringarooma (Tasmania)

7. Cowaramup (Western Australia)

8. Simpson (Western Victoria)

Dairy Australia’s managing director Ian Halliday said: “In what has been a challenging time for the sector, it is even more important to recognise Australia’s hard working, vibrant dairy communities.

“We are incredibly proud of all our nominated communities and would like to thank all entrants for sharing their personal stories of what makes towns like Cohuna LEGENDAIRY.”

Dairy Australia’s award-winning LEGENDAIRY Capital program asks towns from across Australia’s eight dairy regions to describe what makes them LEGENDAIRY and to nominate a project that will benefit the community.

An independent panel of representatives from Australia’s State Dairy Farmer Organisations was appointed to assess each nomination and grade finalists against a set of program criteria.

Cohuna will now receive a $2500 community grant to create a dairy-inspired mural by local artists and a student award to encourage young people to consider a career in the dairy industry.

In September, Cohuna will have a one in eight chance of being named as Australia’s LEGENDAIRY Capital for 2017. The successful community will receive a further $7500 to go towards their local initiative.

In addition, the online virtual Facebook community ‘Show Some #dairylove’ was awarded a High Commendation by the judging panel for its efforts in supporting dairy farmers and regional communities across Australia.
