4pm: ONE of the two boys who went missing on the Murray River on Wednesday night is lucky to be alive, according to police.
Police on both sides of the river began searching for the two 15-year-olds from about 6.30pm after they failed to return from a fishing trip.
The Gunbower and Moama boys were found several hours later.
Sergeant Rod Pell of Echuca police said one of the boys had fallen in the water after their boat struck a log.
‘‘The boy has hit his head on the way down and fractured his eye socket and has a cut to the head,’’ he said.
‘‘He has managed to get out somehow so he was very lucky. There were no drugs or alcohol involved, just inexperience.’’
Sgt Pell said the boy was initially taken to Echuca hospital but the Riv understands he is now recovering in a Bendigo hospital.
