AN ECHUCA family was left in shock after an intruder entered their home and tried to drive off in a car early yesterday.

The man woke the family about 1.30am when he snuck into the Pakenham St home and stole a set of car keys while the father was asleep on the couch just metres away.

They were awoken by the sound of the garage door opening and when the father went to investigate, he found the intruder sitting in his daughter’s vehicle.

The father asked the man what he was doing and he replied ‘‘old mate on the couch’’ said he could take it.

Police arrested a 19-year-old Echuca man not far from the house soon after and he is expected to be charged on summons for aggravated burglary.

He was released pending further investigations.
