MONDAY of the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June saw 235 shooters converge on Echuca Moama Field and Game shooting ground for the third and final day of the Golden Rivers Classic.
In its 18th year, the Golden Rivers is the second biggest shoot on the calendar for the year. The first day was held at Barrook and the second day at Pinegrove.
Course setters made great use of the area to create three shooting grounds with a variety of targets for shooters of all abilities.
Adam Shale from Wodonga/Albury proved too good on the day, coming out two targets ahead of local Mick Keirl to win High Gun. Shale shot an impressive 24, 22, 24 (70) out of 75 targets.
Keirl was close on his heels shooting 24, 23, 21 (68) to give him the win in AA grade.
The two battled it out all weekend, with Keirl taking the win with 67/75 at Barrook to Shale’s 62/75. Shale bounced back at Pinegrove with 69/75 to Keirl’s 67/75.
Ultimately it was Shale who won the Overall High Gun for the three days, with 201 targets shot out of 225, with Keirl just one target behind him on 200 out of 225.
Next closest for the weekend was Adam Hirchfield from Traralgon, shooting 67 out of 75 targets on day three, and taking out second in AA grade for the weekend on 189 targets.
Grade winners for the overall prizes included Mark Gibbs from Ballarat, who won A grade with 180/225; B grade went to Lee Piper from Metro with 150/225; Canberra member Craig Bottom took out C grade with 134/225; Dom Azzopardi from Seymour was the big winner in veterans with 171/225.
The ladies winner was Traralgon’s Anna Hirchfield with 167/225; Wagga Wagga’s Matthew Wilesmith shot an impressive 182/225 to take out juniors; and sub juniors winner was Brendan O’Brien from Ballarat with 154/225.
Club president Ricky Keirl thanked all members from the three clubs who’s hard work and dedication to the sport saw another highly successful weekend run.
Sponsor GB Corsivia’s Simon Gunther and Lee Berger were on hand to present all winners with their prizes, which included trophies and a very generous amount of GB shotgun shells.
Echuca Moama then followed up the big weekend with their regular monthly shoot on the following Sunday.
Lawrie West and his helpers set a challenging but great course for our 50 target June shoot which was very generously sponsored by Mister Embroidery in Kyabram.
A total of 62 shooters enjoyed the sunshine and good company as they made their way around the seven-station course.
Station one saw a low target flying through the trees in front of shooters, followed by a rising outgoing target. This was a great warm up for the targets which would follow.
Station three had a low incoming target from the left followed by a high crossing target from the truck to the shooters right.
Station six proved a challenge for shooters, with a midi target thrown low and fast from the left followed by a standard target, again from the left, which flew slightly higher than the midi.
Mick Keirl backed up his impressive performance from the previous weekend to take out High Gun with 20, 23 (43) out of 50.
District young gun Kiara Dean won juniors, and new shooter (and Dean’s younger sister) Dekoda Dean managed to get second place in Sub Juniors in her first outing as a member of Field and Game.
First place in sub juniors went to Benalla’s James McIntyre with 25/50.
The club’s next shoot is to be held on Sunday, July 16, and this will be a 50-target handicap event beginning at 10am.
This day is generously sponsored by the Echuca Workers and Services Club.
