Cats’ bite beats Bulldog bark

LBU’s A grade netball made it four in a row with a solid win against North Bendigo at Lockington Reserve.

In the hunt for finals, the Cats could afford no mistakes against the Bulldogs, just one spot below them on the ladder. And they didn’t disappoint, recording a comfortable 61-38 win to keep pace with the rest of the finals hopefuls.

‘‘We were very happy with the win, we had three players out but we knew we’d be right with our depth,’’ LBU coach Kristy Roulston said. ‘‘Different combinations became a focus for the game and there were no dramas in the end.’’

The Cats had their noses in front with a four-goal quarter-time lead, but hit their stride in the second quarter, building the lead consistently from there for the 23-goal win. Roulston said the goaling, from star Paige Randall and second-gamer Gemma McNair, had been the standout aspect of the win.

‘‘The goaling was great; Paige was absolutely in top form, she shot beautifully and hardly missed which made things a bit easier,’’ she said.

‘‘Gemma was fantastic, she did such a great job in only her second time in A grade.

‘‘It was her first full game and she stepped up no worries. They combined really well, it’s really promising to see we have such talented depth.’’

She said the other areas of the court had been just as efficient in the important win.

‘‘Georgie Gibbs and Bec Eade combined defensively; we didn’t have Jane Reid’s experience but it worked beautifully.

‘‘Rebecca Dodd was fantastic in the mid-court and with those girls missing, our regular players all stepped up and played beautifully too.’’

The win still didn’t move the Cats into the HDNL top five, but with third through sixth all on seven wins, they are still in the hunt to move up positions in the closing stages of the season.

‘‘We’re defending better every week and we’ve been having trouble bringing the ball up the court, it was nowhere near as smooth as it is now.

‘‘Paige is in great form and we have great depth of fresh legs. Against a Colbo or White Hills, we’ll need them.’’
