Public meetings will be staged outside the Victorian Environment Assessment Council (VEAC) forums scheduled to held across the Murray region over the next two weeks.

Opponents of VEAC’s draft proposals will gather en masse at each forum location at 5.30pm for a structured meeting lasting not more than an hour.

The move was devised at a meeting in Echuca on Tuesday night which formed an alliance of bodies which believe they will be disadvantaged by the VEAC draft recommendations.

Blue, black or stonewashed, denim or corduroy - jeans are a staple ingredient in almost everybody’s wardrobe and Echuca-Moama residents are encouraged to pull them on today for a good cause.

Residents are asked to wear jeans to work or school for Jeans for Genes Day, the major fundraiser of the Children’s Medical Research Institute, which works to try to prevent genetic diseases.

Don and Corale Oberin last night celebrated the end of their sixth term as the Mayor and Mayoress of Echuca.

About 72 guests enjoyed the historic first Mayoral Dinner, catered by Theo Castrissios at the new cvic centre.

Mr Ian Stewart was honored at the dinner for his great service to the Port of Echuca as its Advisory Committee chairman.

During 15 years of service to the city, and as our Mayor and First Lady, the Oberins have brushed shoulders with monarchs, and presided over plenty of history.

Echuca doctors have officially deffered their strike action which was to take effect tomorrow.

A spokesman for the local private practitioners said the withdrawal of some services had been postponed - probably forever.

Doctors had planned to withdraw after hours and maternity services to ‘‘standard’’ or ‘Medicare patients to protest against Government rebate cutbacks in the May Mini Budget.

A claim that the City Council was not prepared to shoulder the responsibility of supplying proper water to residents was made at this week’s meeting of the council.

It was made by Cr. Symons when Council decided to defer a decision on a letter from the Department of Health concerning impurity of the water supply.
