MOST cancer sufferers find themselves unable to work and financial difficulties are common. The Watkins found help from the following:

Australians with rare or less common cancers have typically been offered little in the way of support after diagnosis. The RCA patient support program provides patients with a centre of knowledge, guidance, advice and hope. It helps patients with advice to build a case for compassionate consideration financially.

■The Victorian Patient Transport Assistance Scheme

This helps cover travel and accommodation costs incurred by rural people travelling more than 100km one way for specialist treatment.

“I have had 80 trips to Melbourne, including many more overnight stays in hotels or Peter Mac accommodation as an outpatient and that alone would have sent us broke, we are fortunate to have this program operating in Victoria and people should use it as much as they can.”
