ECHUCA’S 2018 plans have started to take shape with reigning Morrison Medallist Simon Buckley re-signing with the club for a further two years.
The 30-year-old former Melbourne and Collingwood AFL player has been in blistering form, named in the side’s best two players in 13 of this season’s 15 games.
And ever-reliable Lucas Denton, who has not missed a game since joining the Murray Bombers in 2016, has also re-committed to the club for the 2018 season, with further players expected to join the pair in the coming weeks.
Buckley has established himself as potentially the league’s best player, dominating in the midfield as easily his team’s most influential player.
He joined the Murray Bombers in 2013 after being delisted by the Magpies, and has shown brilliant consistency in the middle of the ground, a three-time best and fairest for the club.
Echuca president Brett Stevens couldn’t have been happier with the club champion’s show of loyalty.
‘‘Simmo came to the club initially on a one-year deal, and now this is his second two-year deal,’’ he said.
‘‘He’s been really loyal, by the end of 2019 that will be seven years at the club and you can’t ask for anything more than that.’’
Stevens said the gun on-baller was a player of the highest calibre.
‘‘He’s our best player week in, week out, and over the last five seasons, in my opinion, he’s been the best player in the league,’’ he said.
‘‘He won the Morrison last year but it was probably his weakest of seasons with the club.
‘‘Over the years, you often hear of players in minor leagues winning games off their own boot; Simon’s done that in a major league.’’
