Maths improvement program to target kindergartens

August 07, 2017

PRE-SCHOOLERS in Echuca will benefit from a specialised program to improve their maths skills.

The Victorian Government’s Let’s Count program is being rolled out at Berrimba Childcare Centre this semester.

The program helps early years’ educators engage families and their children in counting, measuring and identifying patterns. It also helps parents and carers to introduce maths to children in a fun, simple way that can be incorporated into everyday life. Member for Northern Victoria Mark Gepp said Berrimba Childcare Centre will learn practical tips and get access to best-practice resources to help them develop children’s maths skills.

‘‘Maths is one of the foundations of essential learning and to make it fun for Echuca kids is a great step in making kids ready for school,’’ Mr Gepp said.

‘‘It is great to see the introduction of Let’s Count in Echuca to encourage parents, carers and pre-school educators to help kids see that learning is fun and engaging.’’

About 500 educators in funded kindergartens will participate in the program over three years, helping an estimated 14,000 pre-schoolers and their families.

Lockington and Gunbower are listed as two of more than 100 priority locations for the program, given they are in the lowest 20 per cent on the Socio-Economic Index for Areas.
