Project firies coming for summer

SIX PROJECT firefighters are set to start in Echuca and Cohuna in the next two months to help keep people safe this summer.

Forest Fire Management Victoria Murray Goldfields district manager Paul Bates said advertising started this week for several project firefighters and three forest and fire operations officers in the district.

Four project firefighters roles will be in Cohuna and two in Echuca, which will be in place by the end of October.

There will be one ongoing forest and fire operations officer position in Cohuna, also to start by the end of October.

Mr Bates said all the roles would be based at Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and Parks Victoria offices and depots.

‘‘These frontline forest firefighters are an important addition to our resources as we prepare for the upcoming fire season in the Loddon Mallee region,’’ he said.

Project firefighters respond to bushfires, support seasonal planned burning preparation and delivery and undertake roadside vegetation and fire trail maintenance.

The permanent forest fire management staff undertake field roles perform critical roles in fighting fires and responding to other emergencies as well as planning, preparation and community engagement for planned burning, along with pest and weed control and road maintenance.
