ECHUCA’S Douglas Murray has shot to the top having reached the semi finals of the WorkSafe Victoria Regional Safety Award in the Victorian Regional Achievement Community Awards.

Doug has dedicated more than 50 years of his life to firearm sporting and advocacy, helping develop and deliver training and license issuing of firearms.

‘‘It is an honour to get this far,’’ he said.

‘‘Safety is everything (when it comes to this industry). I always say if you can’t be safe then you shouldn’t have it (firearms).’’

Doug’s nomination said his efforts have ensured the current and emerging sports people and industry workers who use firearms do so in a safe and responsible manner.

‘‘Doug’s contributions have inadvertently enhanced the safety of the community through this proactive approach toward building a positive profile of responsible firearm license holders,’’ the nomination reads.

‘‘Doug’s relentless efforts to improving the culture of safe and responsible firearm practices and sporting.

‘‘The training, licensing and advocacy which Doug commits to sees a positive, safe and responsible culture being fostered by the license holders and sporting groups.

‘‘Where this sport could easily attract negative connotations, Doug fights to improve the overall community safety and perspective through ensuring those candidates he trains, mentors and issues a license to demonstrate all of the character and skills which prevents accidents and misuse from occurring.

‘‘Doug commits almost everyday to his advocacy for safe and responsible firearm usage either as an armourer, license issuer or as Echuca Pistol Club president.’’

The next round of judging, which determines the finalists, is on August 23 before the winners are announced at a gala night at Flemington on October 13.

All nominees regardless of judging results are invited to attend and will be presented with a framed certificate on stage to honour their achievements and community contribution.
