THERE will be no firewood collection area at Barmah Island this year in an effort to sustainably manage future firewood supply.
Parks Victoria is now planning to undertake harvesting of green and dry standing timber before the autumn collection season which opens in March 2018.
Based on estimates, supply in the area that is available for firewood collection near Barmah will be exhausted in 2020.
Future collection will be subject to access and supply.
Alternative sources of firewood include commercial suppliers or other public firewood collection areas across Victoria, such as at Rushworth.
A firewood collection area will be open on Gunbower Island but collection is restricted to residents of Gannawarra, Loddon and Campaspe shires and Swan Hill Rural City.
Parks Victoria Northern Victoria regional director Daniel McLaughlin encouraged people who needed firewood to consider other designated collection areas or to buy firewood from a commercial supplier.
“Parks Victoria will continue to patrol parks and reserves and heavy penalties apply to people collecting firewood where it is not permitted,’’ he said.
‘‘If you suspect anyone of illegal firewood activities please contact Parks Victoria on 131963.’’
Victoria’s spring firewood collection season will be officially underway from today.
