A FATHER who was caught doing 35km over the speed limit while drunk will spend 24 months off the roads.

Matthew Timbury appeared in Echuca Magistrates Court on Tuesday to plead guilty to charges of speeding and drink driving.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Rachael Hitchins said he was observed by police on April 6.

‘‘At approximately 12.43am the accused was observed driving fast on Echuca-Mitiamo Rd, Echuca,’’ she said.

‘‘That stretch of road is a 100km/h zone and police detected him doing 135km/h.’’

Snr Constable Hitchins said police detected alcohol on the preliminary breath test and Timbury was taken back to Echuca police station for a further test.

‘‘The blood alcohol reading was .121,’’ she said.

‘‘His licence was suspended immediately.’’

Magistrate Michael King said Timbury had a significant traffic history.

‘‘Alcohol and speed are a potent combination and you are lucky you didn’t kill yourself or someone else,’’ he said.

‘‘Drink driving alone is a frequent cause of accidents on our road.

‘‘Despite your previous driving history you have had a gap where you had obeyed the law.’’

Timbury was convicted, fined $1000 and had his license cancelled and disqualified for 24 months.
