City of Echuca
PENNANT sides made a positive start to the season in round one matches last week.
In midweek competition, the division one White side produced a strong win by 27 shots against Rich River. All three rinks won their game in this match.
The division one Blue side travelled to Deniliquin and although it didn’t win overall, they returned home with one rink win. The team of Sandra Glasser, Helen Pitts, Marie Malone and Ros Neil won their game by a single shot.
The division three midweek side competed against Rich River and produced a three-shot win. Bernie Johns, Jeanette Breen, Jenny Blaser and Lorraine West won their game by 14 shots in this encounter.
All five divisions recorded wins in round one of weekend pennant.
The division one side produced a strong win against Mathoura with all three rinks winning their game. This saw an overall win of 40 shots.
The division two side played in a rematch of last year’s grand final and produced a similar result – victory by one shot. Jim Thomas and his team of Carly Taylor, Eddie Blampied and John O’Brien led the way for this win, finishing the day with a nine-shot victory.
Division three travelled to Deniliquin and returned home winners by 34 shots. The team of Noel West, John Blair, Wayne McPoyle and Russell Evans was the best-performed Echuca side on Saturday, winning their game by an impressive 28 shots.
The division four side played at Mathoura and had two winning rinks in their 17-shot win.
Division five played against Deniliquin RSL and won by 12 shots. David Peck, Linda Ormando, John Cowan and John Kelly produced a strong 16-shot win in their game.

LAST Tuesday the weather was kind and greens were running truly for the weekly women’s social bowls.
At the end of the day the winning rink comprised Lesla Maslen, Lorraine Appleby, Pauline Humbert and Kath Palmer (s) in a super impressive display from all bowlers.
On Friday, the midweek pennant competition commenced with the women in battle against Elmore. In a spirited performance the Lockington girls won one rink, only to lose the match 67-80. [B Mustey, R Hanson, A Haines, K Palmer (s) lost to E Locke 18-35; L Maslen, D Smith, L Chugg, P MacFarlane (s) defeated L Wilson 22-13; A Lowrie, M Davis, L McInnes, P Humbert (s) lost to A Williams 27-32].
The weekend pennant first round was played on Saturday with both divisions at home.
In a successful day for the club there were winners all around as division two overcame a strong Rich River combination to win 67-56 and division four accounted for Moama 77-55.
Division two had two rinks in front at the completion of play. [D Isgro, N Haines, L McInnes, R Shawcross (s) d. M Bidgood 27-16; F Chugg, G Shawcross, T Davis, G Turner (s) lt D Wood 19-22; K Stout, R Head, A Kauffman, J Harris (s) d. G Moffatt 21-18].
Division four was able to win two rinks in the re-match of last year’s grand final against Moama and score a comfortable 77-55 victory.

Andrew Harris played his first game of pennant and acquitted himself very well.
Next Saturday division two will travel to Rochester while division four will play City of Echuca away.
The club was saddened to learn of the passing of Val Lupton (wife of David Lupton) last week.
Val Lupton was a keen bowler and was a member of the 1991-1992 division three pennant premiership team.
Val also served on committee and enjoyed social bowls on a weekly basis.
The club extend condolences to Maurie and Helen Vick on the untimely death of their grandson.
Bowlers are reminded of the Mixed Pairs on Sunday starting at 1pm.

Weekend Pennant: Division one: Mathoura 50 lost to Echuca 90 at Mathoura.
Division two: Mathoura 66 lost to Echuca 67 at Echuca.
Division four: Mathoura 51 lost to Echuca 68 at Mathoura.

Congratulations to Beryl Murray, who has been selected to play in the Northern Country Challenge Golden Rivers Challenge being played on October 29 at Moama Bowls Club; we wish her good bowling.

Next Tuesday at 9.45am at City of Echuca, the section winners will play elimination games to decide who are the Men‘s CVBD State Over 60 pairs champions.
