Wickham steps up in world of martial arts

November 25, 2017

ECHUCA martial artist Mitchell Wickham took a major competitive step forward at the recent Australian Federation of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Super BJJ Comp.

Wickham competed for the first time in the adult division, taking part in the adult blue belt 64kg gi division, a full 10kg above his standard weight class.

Wickham was one of two competitors in his division, affording him the opportunity to fight for a gold medal.

The jump in class was no challenge for Wickham, who dominated his opponent, taking the honours with a 14-0 points victory and claiming the gold medal.

Wickham also competed in the no-gi adult division fighting a number of international competitors from the United States.

With no opponents in his weight class, Wickham again jumped a weight class, moving to the adult blue belt 75kg no-gi division.

Wickham put forward a strong performance considering the massive weight difference, but lost by submission due to a foot lock.

Wickham was eliminated after his fight, claiming a bronze medal as a result.
