Jess Smeaton from Donkey Shelter Tongala is inviting everyone to come and hug some donkeys at the shelter's Open Day on Saturday.

THE Tongala Donkey Shelter is hosting its annual fundraising day on Sunday, December 3.

Home to more than 200 donkeys, the shelter is one of only three in Australia.

Founder May Dodd said the shelter relied on fundraising and donations to go towards the $250,000 required to run it each year.

“A donkey is friendly, curious and affectionate — a lot like a dog actually,” May said.

The shelter caters for donkeys of any age, size and colour and they have a philosophy to never say no to a rescue.

“We take the donkey first and sort out the rest later,” May said.

The open day includes a tour and talk on donkeys.

There are a variety of items for sale including clothing, cards, calendars and specialty made donkey jewellery.

There will also be a sausage sizzle and a variety of cakes and biscuits for sale.

Entry is $20 per car.

Gates open from 11am – 3pm at 1949 Matheson Rd, Tongala.
