THE women will resume their weekly social bowls this week following the Christmas — New Year break.
The open fours, sponsored by the Moama Bowling Club, was cancelled on Thursday due to the extreme heat and will be re-scheduled to a later date.
On Tuesday Kath Palmer will represent Locky in the CVBD Ladies Champion of Champions event to be held at the Moama Bowling Club. Good bowling Kath.
On the weekend the CVBD Champion of Champions was held at the City of Echuca Bowls Club.
On both days the bowlers had to contend with strong, gusty southerly winds, which created some problems gaining the correct length and weight.
Our club champion Ray Hanson was far from disgraced when he lost a thrilling match against the young Ashley Vesty from Rochester.
Little separated the two bowlers as they fought for supremacy as the score reached 22-all. Hanson held two shots before Vesty inspected the head and decided to play an up-shot that removed one of the two shot bowls.
Hanson came up wide as Vesty drove the jack into the ditch to hold three shots and game.
Hanson had 60cm to draw shot, but unfortunately his final bowl just toppled into the ditch. Vesty won 25-22.
In other games played Vern Rehe (Moama) defeated Dale Weymouth (Deniliquin RSL) 25-20; Brent Reiner (City of Echuca) defeated Gary Radford (Rich River) 25-12; and Mark Quor (Mathoura) defeated Keith Murphy (Elmore) 25-16. In the following round Rehe defeated Greg Lyon (Tongala) 25-24; and Vesty d. Jamie Shields (Deniliquin) 25-19.
The semi-finals produced some heart-stopping moments as Reiner defeated Rehe in a thriller, 25-22, while Quor was too consistent for Vesty to win 25-19.
In the final, Reiner grabbed the early ascendency to lead 13-6 and was able to control the mat to defeat a gallant Quor 25-16 to take out the title and will now represent the CVBD in the regional final.
Vern Rehe will be playing in the BowlsVic State Bowling Arm championships to be held at the Armadale Bowling Club today.
Joan Moss (Mathoura) and Vera Curnow (Moama) will play in the women’s State Bowling Arm State Championships tomorrow, also at Armadale.
Bowlers are reminded to enter the popular Mixed Pairs 2x4x2 Cunnington Cup to be held on Sunday, January 27 starting at 1pm. Contact Annie Haines 5486 8220 or Chris Stewart 5486 2607 for entries.

Mathoura
CVBD champion of champions singles action saw the best of the best from around the Campaspe area converge on City of Echuca Bowls Club on the weekend.
It was played over Saturday and Sunday — and Mathoura was represented by singles champion Mark Quor.
Mark won his first game and was into the semi-final on Sunday against Rochester’s Ash Vesty.
It was a closely fought game with a high quality of bowls played by both bowlers. Mark won this game and was into the final — to face Brent Reiner from Echuca.
Brent got away to a good start but Mark fought back to make a real game of it and gave himself every chance of winning, but in the end Brent won 25-16.
The club was proud of Mark’s representation of the Mathoura Bowling Club.
