THE 2018 country football interleague fixtures have been released with the Goulburn Valley League’s likely MCG battle with the Ballarat Football Netball League the pick of the fixtures.

As the highest ranked match-up of country leagues (seventh against eighth) the GVL’s game has been picked as part of the 2018 AFL Country Game, Essendon’s annual battle with Geelong celebrating regional Australia.

And with the game expected to be confirmed to the MCG in the new year, it’s hoped the prime fixture placement will entice the league’s best talent to the interleague squad.

The GVL could use all the help it can get, with many top-line talents opting out of this season’s seven-point loss to the Ovens and Murray FL.

Meanwhile, 2018 will bring an away trip for the Murray FNL, heading across to tackle Gippsland League.

Despite being the higher-ranked team at number 13, the Murray League will have to make the long trek across the state for the May 19 showdown.

It was in fine form in the 2017 encounter with the Wimmera Football League with a 22-point victory.

And the Heathcote and District FNL will look to rebound from its loss to the Central Murray FNL against the Geelong and District FL away from home.

The HDFNL has had two rough years at the interleague level, belted by the Bellarine FNL by 80 points in 2016 before a 43-point loss this year.
