HDFL opening blockbuster

A ROUND one grand final rematch in Leitchville highlighted the release of the 2018 Heathcote and District Football Netball League fixture.

Great rivals Leitchville-Gunbower and North Bendigo, who have squared off in the last three grand finals, had to wait until round seven to clash in 2017 but won’t have to wait at all next season with the fixture locked in for the season opener.

Lockington-Bamawm United will start its campaign under new coach Kahl Oliver with an away trip to Mount Pleasant, while its first game with rival LG won’t take place until round nine on the Queen’s Birthday weekend.

The Cats, expected to be much improved under their new leadership and after stocking up on experienced talent, will get an early test in round two, hosting preliminary finalist Huntly.

The only night fixture of the season will be hosted by Colbinabbin.

The game will serve as the Hoppers’ season opener, and follows the success of their night game held in 2017 on Good Friday.

Heathcote will start the season a week late, with a bye in round one, kicking off its campaign a week later hosting Colbinabbin.

And it will get little respite the week after with a trip to Leitchville to take on the Bombers.

Elmore’s opening month — Colbinabbin, LG, Mount Pleasant and Huntly — could prove tough to come back from, especially if the Bloods can’t take care of business against the 2017 wooden-spooner Blues.

The finals start on August 18, with the grand final locked in for September 8, again at Huntly.
