AS WE come to the end of one year and the start of another, we enter a time of looking back and looking forward.
The endless series of top 10 lists for 2017 have already started appearing.
Yesterday I was reading over the 10 worst movies of 2017 and was thankful I hadn’t wasted my time with any of them.
Sadly I then read a list of the top ten movies of 2017 and realised I hadn’t seen any of those either.
As we look back we’re reminded of how much has happened this year in our nation and around the globe.
The political landscape has shifted much in the past 12 months, both in Australia and around the world – and 2017 has also seen big changes to our community and culture.
But beyond these wider changes, I wonder what stands out as you look back over your life?
I do hope that as you look back on 2017 you can see signs of God’s blessings and rejoice.
Where there have been struggles and challenges, I trust that you can see God’s hand at work sustaining and supporting you.
I likewise trust you can see how God has been at work in those things that have been causes of celebration and triumph.
Through it all I hope that you can see how God has been working in and through you this past year.
And as we stand on the brink of 2018, we naturally look forward as well.
There might be big events coming up this year that you’re eagerly anticipating, a wedding, the birth of a child, starting school or a new job.
But along with things you’re looking forward to, there may be others that you’re not sure how you will handle.
As 2018 rolls around, whether it’s a year of celebrations or challenges, I encourage you to seek the strength and support that only God can provide.
As we look back and look forward, as we consider all the changes around us and all that is to come, it can be comforting to remember that some things never change.
At the top of this list is God, for as Hebrews 13:8 reminds us: Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
He is the solid rock on which we can build our lives, so that they are never shaken, no matter what comes in 2018 and beyond.
