TRAFFIC in the twin towns was thrown into chaos for more than two hours on Friday after a car crashed into fencing just before the bridge proper.
Police said a man in his 70s had a medical incident while driving onto the bridge about 12.15pm.
The spokesman said the man’s car veered off the road and through the fence separating the walking path before coming to a halt.
The driver was lucky he had not been travelling faster as his momentum may have carried him down the embankment.
“Emergency services attended the scene and the man was taken to Echuca hospital as a precaution, but later allowed to leave,” the spokesman said. “Traffic was stopped while a tray truck got into position to remove the damaged vehicle,” he said.
As a result roads were gridlocked in every direction and it was well after 2pm before normal traffic conditions resumed.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to call Echuca police station on 5483 1500.
