IT’S not every day that young athletes get the opportunity to learn from one of the best in their sport.

For some local tennis players, this opportunity came up last week to take part in a clinic run by champion coach Roger Rasheed.

Rasheed has had quite a career as a coach, having sat in the box of Lleyton Hewitt, Gaël Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Grigor Dimitrov.

So when the opportunity to partake in a clinic in Bendigo with Rasheed presented itself, a number of local tennis players jumped at the chance.

The clinic was open to players throughout the region aged between 11 and 18.

Eight players from Rich River, LBU and Echuca South took the opportunity to take part in the clinic.

“A lot of my coaching is based around how do you get value out of your time on the court and how do you get value out of every ball that goes over the net,” Rasheed told media.

“It’s also about making sure the players know why we are doing each drill and what the long term benefits of each one is.’’

The sessions follow a successful trip to the Alicia Molik Cup, which featured a number of the players involved in the tournament.
