The lights show the way again

Greg Taylor and John Simson were thrilled the Illawarra Drive Christmas lights display raised more than $4000 for the community.

ECHUCA’S Illawarra Drive Christmas lights display was a glittering success once again, raising more than $4000 for various charity groups across the district.

In its tenth year, the Echuca Lions Club event saw dozens of homes in Illawarra Dr and surrounding streets light up the night for a good cause.

Echuca Lions, the Echuca-Moama Veterans Support Centre, Moama Anglican Grammar School and St Joseph’s College took to the street to raise funds this Christmas.

The event, the brainchild of residents Greg and Helen Taylor, has raised more than $32,000 since its inception.

‘‘Illawarra Dr is perfect for fundraising, as you have to turn around to get out, so it creates this bottleneck,’’ Greg said.

‘‘One night 10 years ago I was watching the cars crawl past and said, ‘wouldn’t mind a dollar for every car’. And then I thought, hang on a second — we could use this for our community.’’

Lion John Simson thanked Wayne Norwood of First National for donating a sign to promote the event.
