A KYABRAM man who stole a pushbike has been convicted and fined $300, despite claiming he bought the bike from a friend.
Carmello Zerafa, 52, pleaded guilty at Echuca Magistrates Court on Wednesday to theft.
Police prosecutor Senior Constable Rachael Hitchens said police searched Zerafa’s home at 11.48am on March 9, 2017.
‘‘Police found inside a locked garden shed a bicycle which was believed to be stolen,’’ she said.
‘‘He was arrested and conveyed to the Kyabram police station for questioning.
‘‘When interviewed, he told police he had purchased the bike from a friend and when told that it was believed to be stolen, he said ‘that’s bulls***’.’’
Defence lawyer Kate Freshwater said inquiries were made and Zerafa was able to produce the name of the person he bought the bike from.
