THE Southern 80 runs the risk of being stopped if spectators swim during the race.
Moama Water Sports Club issued an urgent warning on Saturday after people were spotted swimming at the end of Winbi Rd on both sides of the river.
There was also a Tarzan rope at the end of Braund Rd on the Victorian side of the river.
‘‘The Southern 80 ski race runs the risk of being stopped if spectators keep doing the wrong thing by swimming during the race,’’ Southern 80 said on its Facebook page.
‘‘Swimmers pose a huge risk to everyone involved in our great race and we ask you to keep out of the water at all times and encourage your mates to do the same
‘‘Don’t be the person who stops the Southern 80.’’
Organisers are pleading with swimmers to keep out of the river during race times when it returns next year.
‘‘First and foremost this is a safety issue – boats will be coming through doing 200km/h at times – in the confines of the river that is a formula for disaster if people try and share the same stretch of river,’’ a spokesman said.
