Accounting for council expenses

CAMPASPE Shire Council noted a report on councillor expenses for the period from July 1 to December 31 2017.

The Local Government Act 1989 provides that the mayor and councillors are entitled to an annual allowance to meet some of the costs incurred in meeting their broad range of responsibilities.

Reporting of the expenses is broken down into several categories including allowance, travel, telephone, training and conferences, accommodation and reimbursement of expenses.

CR Vicki Neele said most costs incurred were travel and technology expenses.

“It’s good for people to see how much is spent. Council does cost but the expenses help provide a service to the community.”
