ACCESS to firewood at Barmah Island will be targeted to residents following community consultation along the Murray River.

ACCESS to firewood at Barmah Island will be targeted to residents following community consultation along the Murray River.

Those eligible to collect firewood include residents from postcode 3639 (Barmah, Lower Moira, Picola, Picola West), Moira and Campaspe shire residents with a concession card (health care card, pensioner concession card or veterans affairs gold card) and members of the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation.

To sustainably manage future firewood supply, Parks Victoria will assess the remaining supply of firewood at Barmah Island two weeks into the autumn season.

If supply levels allow, access to firewood may be extended to other residents of the Moira and Campaspe shires.

Alternative sources of firewood include unrestricted public firewood collection areas across Victoria or commercial suppliers.

‘‘Parks Victoria will patrol firewood collection areas and may ask collectors to prove their address when collecting firewood,’’ Parks Victoria district manager Daniel McLaughlin said.

‘‘Parks Victoria rangers will patrol forests, parks and reserves during the firewood collection season to make sure people abide by collection rules and closures.’’

Future firewood collection from Barmah Island will be subject to access and supply.

The autumn firewood collection season starts on Thursday and closes on June 30.
