LANDHOLDERS across Campaspe Shire are being urged to apply for permits to burn for agricultural purposes in advance.

LANDHOLDERS across Campaspe Shire are being urged to apply for permits to burn for agricultural purposes in advance.

CFA Campaspe Shire district 20 operations officer John Cutting said burn permits would not be allowed until the long weekend in March based on the conditions.

‘‘Once the risk is reduced we will allow people to burn,’’ he said.

‘‘People need to lodge their application at the Campaspe Shire office and the shire will forward it to the CFA for processing which will be free of charge and it will take five business days to be issued.

‘‘However, if you choose to go through the shire for a quicker timeframe, there will be a $70 application fee.

‘‘The permit process allows us to control fires in the landscape.’’

Mr Cutting said it had been a relatively quiet fire season and thanked the community for doing the right thing.

He stressed the Fire Danger Period was still in force and people lighting fires illegally or without a permit would be prosecuted.
