THIRTEEN local ballerinas are practising their grand jetés and pirouettes in preparation for their big moment in The Phantom of the Opera.

The dancers, eight of whom are from Suzanne’s School of Ballet and three from RivAdance, have been rehearsing weekly as part of the Echuca-Moama Theatre Company production.

Suzanne’s owner Jodie Ritchie has choreographed the classical ballet routine from the Il Muto scene, while Hype Dance owner Colleen DeWinne is choreographing Hannibal and Masquerade.

‘‘Hannibal is more of a contemporary style with some pointe work and Masquerade we haven’t started working on yet,’’ Colleen said.

‘‘Other than the three dance routines, the dancers will be on stage throughout the show in various scenes.

‘‘It’s fantastic working with en pointe ballet dancers and it’s been lovely getting to know and work with Miss Jodie who has produced some beautiful dancers, along with Miss Robin Hayes from RivAdance.’’

Colleen said the dancers, aged between 13 and 17, were all very excited about being in the show and looking forward to rehearsing with the rest of the cast.

‘‘Phantom is a wonderful opportunity for our local ballet dancers to showcase all their hard work and make their teachers proud,’’ she said.

Co-director Mark Thomson said rehearsals were progressing well and on schedule.

‘‘All aspects of this major production are in full swing to ensure they come together,’’ he said.

‘‘The singing from both lead and ensemble cast members is sounding amazing and improving each week.’’

Marks said the costume team had also made massive inroads.

‘‘There are still a number of costumes to be created or altered and we are looking forward to the sewing workshops that will be needed over the next few weeks,’’ he said.

‘‘The set design has been confirmed by the production team and the construction and painting will start soon.’’
