IT’S Echuca Cup week.
And the big day will feature the best the area has to offer.
Some 18 horses have been nominated across the day’s racing by some of Echuca’s top trainers.
Gwenda Johnstone has nominated four horses to run on the day.
The biggest name among them is Pravro, who has been nominated to run in the Echuca Cup itself.
The five-year-old gelding has taken to the track on 27 occasions, with five victories and six placings.
He has claimed prize money of $161,875 through his career to date.
The team of Michael Cornish and Donna Gaskin has nominated the most horses for the event of any local trainers.
Seven of the stable’s finest will take to the track, with one entered into the cup.
Eight-year-old gelding Myword-saidthebird will be lining up for its 49th career start.
In his previous 48, eight wins and 11 placings have been the result.
He has also collected $137,892 while running for four different trainers.
While the Johnstone and Cornish Gaskin stables have the only two nominations for the big race, they won’t be the only stables on the track for their home event.
Daryl Archard has put four horses up for a run, while Rhys Archard will saddle one runner. Alan Newton will be putting two of his team on the track.
Echuca Racing Club chief executive Leigh Newton said the club was ecstatic to have so many local runners taking to the track.
‘‘I think our trainers are really keen to win here, not just on Echuca Cup day,’’ Newton said.
‘‘They love being able to run their own course and be a part of their home event.’’
