MIA Oberin claimed top honours in the Moama Lion’s Youth of the Year competition last week.
The Moama Anglican Grammar student won the public speaking award and the overall award in the event held in Numurkah.
Mia competed with fellow Grammar students Alex Smith, Isabelle Williams and Maddy Zlateff and will now compete in the next round later this month in Baranduda, Victoria.
In her prepared speech, Mia spoke about the importance of educating women on a local and international level.
“Female education is a passion of mine and it was something I really wanted to talk about,” she said.
“I wrote the speech and practiced it multiple times. My teachers were a big help in getting me ready for the competition.’’
Mia said she was surprised to do so well at the competition and was excited to compete in the next round.
“I had to overcome some nerves early on, but when I got going the practice kicked in,” she said.
“There was some high quality competition so I’m very proud to make it this far.”
