The soaring number of lives lost on Victorian roads this year has prompted an additional statewide police operation targeting speeding, drunk and drug driving, fatigue, seatbelt offences and driver distraction.
Operation Argus has been set up in direct response to the 192 people who have died on Victorian roads this year - four of whom died in Campaspe Shire.
Sergeant Paul Nicoll of Campaspe Highway Patrol said officers would be highly visible across the region.
“We will be having morning and afternoon shifts operating and our aim is to reduce road trauma," he said.
“We’re taking road safety seriously and motorists, cyclists and pedestrians need to do the same.”
Sgt Nicoll said during the National Day of Action last week, police issued 10 speeding tickets in Echuca.
They also carried out 60 random breath tests and eight drug tests, all of which came back negative.
"There were no serious injuries or fatal collisions," he said.
"Motorists seem to getting the message."
Operation Argus runs from today, September 5, to Sunday, September 8.
