WHILE Champagne is traditionally the celebratory drink, Burke and Wills Winery owners Andrew Pattison and Heather McCormack are toasting with their award-winning Shiraz.

Crowned the best in Victoria, Burke and Wills’ 2015 Vat 1 Shiraz wowed the judges at last week’s regional Victorian Wine Show.

This is the first Premier’s Trophy, which recognises the best wine from regional wine show winners — making it the ‘champion of champions’.

As the owner of Burke and Wills, Mr Pattison said he and his wife Heather found the award a welcome surprise.

“It was a bit of a coup for such a small winery to get such large recognition,” Mr Pattison said.

“This competition is the best of the best, now we can say the Heathcote wine region really does have Victoria’s best Shiraz.”

The 2015 Shiraz caught the judges’ eyes – and palates – at the Heathcote wine show where it earned Andrew and Heather four awards including best young Shiraz.

The secret? Andrew puts it down to a good year and the Heathcote terroir.

“It’s the climate of Heathcote and the terroir, everything about the site in Mia Mia points to excellent, it just goes to show Heathcote really is the best place to grow wines” he said.

“This is our third winery, I’ve been doing it for 31 years and I’ve been the principal winemaker for 22 of those.

“It still feels like it’s my first day on the job, the more you learn you realise how little you know about everything.

“Heathcote has a reputation for great Shiraz, if you want to make a great Shiraz or Cabernet it really is the best region to do it in.”
