The recent heat was kept at bay on Saturday by some cloud cover that kept the temperature at about a reasonable 35°C at the Deni Lawn Tennis Club courts.
However a wind coming in from the south was disruptive and was peaking at more than 60km/h throughout the afternoon, dying off as last sets were being played.
In both matches played the score was eight sets to six with Peppin Planners/TA Maher and Taskers Battlers/Elders the winning teams in the senior competition.
Peppin started strongly against AgSpares/Legal Eagles by winning five of the seven men’s sets. However the men played five of those sets out in tie-break games, of which Peppin won four. The game count in the seven men’s sets was a close 51 games to 48.
Peppin’s ladies shared their sets (two apiece) with AgSpares.
AgSpares made a run to win the match in the mixed doubles and won two of three sets but were unable to claim one last set to tie the match.
Peppin won eight sets (97 games) to six (90 games) with six of the 14 sets decided by tie-break.
Nick Bliss, Peter Robinson, Jim Hare and Di Whittakers were three set winners.
Taskers Battlers/Elders out-lasted Mitre 10 to win eight sets (88 games) to six (83 games).
Taskers’ ladies proved the difference on the day winning five of the seven sets played in the ladies and the mixed.
Mitre 10’s men won four of their seven sets with John Henderson a three-set winner in a losing team. Lorraine Tasker also starred with three set wins.
There was no more important set than the last in which Deb Holloway paired with Henry Osborne playing against Connie Haines and John James. It was a hard fought match with Haines and James the victors to lead their team to a win.
