The Deniliquin Yard Dog Association had a storm beginning when it formed in 2011, with that year’s inaugural trials at the Deniliquin Show cancelled due to a massive rain event in the region.

In 2018, the association finally hit the jackpot and was actually forced to turn away some entries due to the huge influx of competitors.

The number has doubled from the first trial, with a record 34 competitors with more than 70 dogs as part of the Deniliquin Show last month.

Due to a mammoth last minute effort by a small dedicated group of workers the Deni Yard Dog Association now features some permanent yard facilities.

As well as providing a better course this means two events can be held simultaneously.

Previously the event could not have catered for the big number of entries the annual event now attracts.

Competitors commented favourably both on the standard of the event and the picturesque setting among the huge shady redgums.

As well as providing first time handlers an opportunity to initiate their dogs in the Encourage Event, more seasoned travellers from as far as Colac and Warnambool competed in the higher standard events.

Given the popularity of working dog events the committee has broadened its activities to include a training weekend at the showgrounds in mid-August.

In 2017 the Deniliquin Yard Dog Association joined forces with Warrick Doolan of Finley to reintroduce the Utility Dog trials held at the annual P & A Society Show.

This event proved so popular last year that it will be extended to cover two days — September 1 and 2, 2018.

There is also a Facebook page for anyone interested in following the events.
