Captain Greg Hall hosted his favourite string golf event at Merrigum on Saturday.
While the winning score was outstanding, it appears that for many their string was nowhere near long enough.
Effectively a player’s string is their handicap and it takes a bit of judicious use to make the most of it.
You can move your ball any distance, mostly into the hole and then cut off a length from your string equal to the distance you moved the ball without counting it as a shot. Andrew Wood obviously made the best of his short piece of string, winning the day comprehensively with a score of 64. He finished five shots ahead of his closest rival which was a pretty good effort given he had the shortest piece of string in the field. John Fuller was next best with 69 and Ash Sanders finished third with 70. Most of the rest of the players in the field would have been wishing their string was actually a piece of elastic because quite a few struggled with what the captain offered as their handicap. First timers may well have had trouble with the concept too, but in horse racing parlance, will be better for the run. Nearest the pins were won by Andrew Wood on the sixth, Jeff Parry on the ninth, Bruce Brown on the jackpot twelfth and James Campbell on the fourteenth.
Winter pennant began on Sunday with Merrigum taking on Mooroopna at Valley View. It proved to be a very close tussle but in the final wash-up Merrigum came away with a 3/2 win. Clint Prygoda won his match on the 20th hole, Bruce Brown finished 2 up and James Campbell won his match on the 19th. The other two matches finished on the 17th and 18th holes so it was in the balance all day and it was good to come away with a first up win. Pennant this week is at Mooroopna against Cobram-Barooga. Hit-off is from 9am.
Next Saturday’s event is stroke for the Privilege Cup, least putts sponsored by Simon and Tash Doherty and it is also round four of the eclectic.
Valley View
Our golfers made hard work of Saturday’s Par event with only two scores on the positive side of the ledger recorded.
In A Grade Pooch McHale posted the best score of the day with +3 and that was after he scrubbed the last two holes. He took home the Ky Tyre Service winner’s voucher finishing three shots ahead of Mick Gallivan with even par.
Unlike his good mate Kevin Bauerle Pooch will not need a dictionary and thesaurus to make sense of this report – I’m sure Jan will be more than happy to read it to him!!
Even Par was the winning score in B Grade with Alan Curnow taking home the Ky Tyre Service voucher from Geoff Squizzy Squires with 1 down.
A lengthy walk to hit off on the 13th didn’t deter Marie Watt who posted the only other positive score of the day (+2) and Marie finished two shots clear of Leann Busch with even par.
Ball comp winners were Gill Thorsen (-1), Kevin Bauerle (-1), Marilyn West (-2) and Craig Larcombe also with -2 after he started by putting his first shot of the day out of bounds and wiping the first two holes as his playing partners noticed the distinctly glazed look on his face fixed directly at the car park after he put his third tee shot into the trees on the sixth.
Kevin Bauerle won the Ky Tyre Service voucher on the 15th with the only tee shot to find a Par 3 green on the day.
On Monday Peter Blackmore won the men’s Queen’s Birthday Stableford event with 39 points from Lawrie Casey with 38 and Jenny Bauerle was the ladies’ winner with 37 from Marie Watt with 34.
Ball winners were Mick Coyne with 37, Pooch (36) Bud Thorsen (34), Kevin Bauerle (34) while Peter Blackmore and Helen Armstrong took home the NTP balls on the third.
With winter upon us our Pennant team kicked off its season with a 4-1 win over Numurkah at Numurkah.
David Collins set the team on the course to victory with a 2&1 win though I’m told it may not be enough to hold his spot next week.
Mick Coyne and Steve “The Eloquent One” Usher also recorded 2&1 wins while Mick Gallivan was gallant in his 1 down defeat.
That left the captain to bring home the last match and after a sluggish start that saw him four down with five to play, he was able to turn it around to record a fighting 1 up win. Actually, with too many rounds like that he may be the one making way for the return of Ash Kuiper!!

Valley View Ladies
While rain confined us to our barracks last Wednesday, visitors from around the district enjoyed good playing conditions on Friday as we contested the highly valued Gold Watch trophies. Past members Ann and James Lally have been our generous sponsors for a number of years now, and it was a thrill to have Ann play in the field and then be joined by James for the presentation of the beautiful prizes.
Players from eleven clubs participated in the Aggregate Stableford competiiton, but it was a very local affair when it came to the Winners’ Circle. Jenni Bauerle and Marlene Topp finished with 66 points, as did the combination of Bev Lyon and Marilyn West, but it was the former who nudged out the latter in the countback.
Ball winners Sharon Harrison - Shirley Soares (63) and Leanne Busch- Helen Emery (62) were the other locals to perform well.
Nearest the Pins were a different story, however, with visitors Tracey Clouston (Numurkah), and Rich River members Chris Kelly and Marilyn Robins taking home the honours for A, B and C grade.
Today we will play for the Monthly Medal which was postponed last week.
