Hannon is remembered as a strong defender who was predominantly played at full-back, although he did have the ability to go forward.
Echuca stalwart Rob Owen recalled the moment he first laid eyes on Hannon.
“He kicked about six goals in his first game for the club as a youngster against South Bendigo playing in the forward pocket when the team was short,” he said.
“Barry had a prodigious drop kick (yes, in the days of those kicks) and he was famous for landing the kicks on the caravan park cricket pitch end from the high school goal square end.”
During his career, Hannon also played two games for South Melbourne in the VFL in 1961, on a permit from Echuca.
His debut came against Richmond at Punt Rd in the Swans’ first Anzac Day match.
The Swans went on to win the match 12.17 (89) to 6.9 (45).
Hannon was one of three debutants alongside John Carlile and Neil Lewthwaite.
His second game came a week later at South Melbourne’s home ground, Lake Oval, against Carlton, with the visitors prevailing by 16 points.
Hannon was awarded life membership by the Echuca club after playing 150 games.
