ECHUCA Regional Health staff have been left shocked and saddened by the death of former surgical registrar Daniel Christidis in a shark attack on Monday.

Mr Christidis, 33, died in North Queensland after he was attacked while paddleboarding in the Whitsundays.

A researcher at Melbourne's Austin Hospital, he had previously completed two terms as a surgical registrar at ERH from August 2015 to February 2016.

Echuca hospital chief executive Nick Bush said he made a lasting impact on staff and patients in his six months there.

"Daniel was well-regarded and well-liked by doctors and nurses," he said.

"He was very kind and caring to his patients as well as the staff he worked with.

"Staff I have spoken to said he was very gifted but said his stand-out quality was his empathy and kindness towards his patients.

"The hospital has been left shocked and saddened by his death.

"Our thoughts go out to his family."
