The Blues fell to home side Finley in the opening grand final of the day, with the Cats claiming the flag by six goals in a 54-48 win.
While the Blues were very strong in patches, they were unable to overcome an excellent shooting performance from Finley’s goalies.
Blues coach Sue Joyce said it was a tough contest.
“We knew coming into this match that it wasn’t going to be easy,” she said.
“Finley are a really strong side who are going to continue to improve as they move up in age.
“But I’m proud of our performance. I’m proud of the fact our girls worked hard at every stage of the contest.”
After forcing turnovers early in the contest, the Cats were able to earn an early three goal buffer which was rarely dented by the Blues for the remainder of the match.
With Finley’s goal end being automatic in their shooting, the margin began to blow out towards the end of the second half.
But the Blues charged back, cutting the margin down and locking the scores up early in the third quarter.
“They dug deep and kept fighting,” Joyce said.
“They knew what they had to do as the contest went on, and they continued to play the way they have all year and forced their way back into the match.”
But not long after evening the contest, the Cats again got out to a strong lead and never looked back.
“Unfortunately, a couple of things let us down,” Joyce said.
While the Blues were unable to get the job done, Joyce said she was incredibly proud of their season.
“I’m so thrilled that they got to a grand final,” she said.
“At the start of the year it wasn’t something we looked toward. We wanted to see them grow as players and in their development and they have done that all year.”
