Echuca United’s C reserve netballers are champions – as they have been all year.
It became a reality this morning after they defeated Mulwala by three goals to finish the year as Murray Netball League premiers and champions.
The Eagles burst out of the blocks to assert their dominance, but Mulwala’s determination meant they would not go away.
But as they have done all season, United continued to keep their opposition at arm’s length.
And when the final siren sounded, coach Jodi Frost couldn’t wipe the smile off her face.
“Going through undefeated is a dream come true really,” she said.
“Mulwala put the pressure right on until the siren so there were definitely a few nervous moments late in the game.
“There was a lot of pressure on us heading into the game so I couldn’t be happier.”
United’s victory was built in defence after Nikki Nuku was awarded the medal for the best player on the court as voted by the umpires.
Against Mulwala’s much taller goal shooter, Nuku used her experience to consistently intercept the ball which left Frost impressed.
“From the start we knew Nikki had a big job to do,” Frost said.
“But she embraced the challenge and from the very beginning I thought she got on top of her opponent which allowed us to limit their chances under the ring.”
While Nuku deserved plenty of credit for her display, Frost said the commitment from all 11 players helped the Eagles reach the promised land.
“We managed to get everyone on the court which isn’t always easy to do,” she said.
“We’ve got so many different types of players, whether it be our mother-daughter combination or players who come out of retirement.
“I’m extremely grateful to have coached and played with these girls.”
