The lone side to claim Campaspe region heritage in the combined competition, Moama has won the only two Premier Leagues in history, and is showing no signs of stopping now, if early-season form is anything to go by.
The Steamers are a perfect 5-0 in the competition and are a single point off the top of the ladder, while still holding a game in hand.
The season began on October 4, with Moama dominating Marong 18-95 to 0-55.
The Steamers followed with wins over Bendigo East (17-111 to 1-48), Strathfieldsaye (18-107 to 0-51), and Eaglehawk (18-97 to 0-60), the side yet to drop a rink heading into this weekend’s match against South Bendigo.
The game at South Bendigo Bowls Club was Moama’s closest of the season.
Two rinks swung the Steamers’ way, primarily the one skipped by Cameron Keenan as his squad, featuring Jacob Brighton (lead), Lachlan Robertson (second) and Cassandra Millerick (third), dominated the James McGillivray-led South Bendigo outfit 38-10.
Fellow Moama skip Alex Marshall also led a successful effort, picking up rink points 24-16.
South Bendigo did reduce the margin through Dale Oddy, who defeated Kevin Anderson’s quartet 28-11, and Liam Crapper, who took down Brody Harker in a tight contest 28-26.
Although they walked away with their lowest point total of the season so far, the Steamers were still well on top on the final scorecard, taking the game 14-99 to 4-82.
Moama trails only Bendigo on the league table, but is likely to go top, at least for a day, as it cashes in its game in hand.
The Steamers have their catch-up fixture with Golden Square on Friday at Golden Square Bowls and Croquet Club, before returning home for a top-of-the-table clash with Bendigo at Moama Bowling Club on Saturday.
