Cobram Community Cinema Inc has secured more than $500,000 in Federal Government funding, meaning the $1 million project will soon be able to go ahead.
The building will be a twin cinema — one seating 94 people and including a stage, the other seating 65 and will include an open area which will double as a function/meeting room.
Committee members said the cinema will employ one young manager, two youth trainees and up to eight youth volunteers with volunteers being given training to obtain future employment.
Regional Development Australia Hume congratulated the Cobram Community Cinema Inc on its success as part of the Building Better Regions Fund.
Chair Susan Benedyka said the funding would help the Hume region, made up of the local government areas of Alpine, Benalla, Greater Shepparton, Indigo, Mansfield, Mitchell, Moira, Murrindindi, Strathbogie, Towong, Wangaratta and Wodonga, to grow and prosper.
‘‘The Hume RDA committee was pleased to provide a letter of support to help strengthen many of the applications that were submitted and has worked closely with the project proponents in the development of these applications,’’ Ms Benedyka said.
‘‘We are delighted that many of the successful recipients have strong alignment with our regional strategic plan and key directions — the Hume Strategy for Sustainable Communities 2010-20.’’
Ms Benedyka said while tourism, including bike trails, food, festivals and significant events, were big winners from the latest funding round, it was great to see many grassroots organisations such as the Cobram Community Cinema benefit also.
‘‘I am thrilled that there are many community groups who have successfully applied for these grants and they must be very happy with the outcomes...’’ Ms Benedyka said.
