But the position was not be vacant for long, with Daniel Preston taking on the role following Liddell’s retirement, from yesterday.
Starting his journey in the Sunraysia/Mallee region, Liddell spent four years there as the football development manager before moving to Shepparton to continue his work.
During his time at AFL GM, Liddell was involved in many operations throughout the region and went above and beyond his role to further the development of football in the area.
Liddell was an under-16 Victoria Country selector for eight years where he guided sides to wins at the National Championships, as well as initiating the first youth girls team in the Goulburn Murray in 2009.
In a career spanning nearly 20 years, Liddell was an advocate for youth, paving the way for the future of football right through the community.
Preston was appointed football development manager by regional general manager Jamie Macri.
‘‘Daniel will be a terrific acquisition to our team and we are really excited to welcome him into the new role,’’ Macri said.
Previously acting as development coach of the Murray Bushrangers, Preston’s involvement in football throughout the community has been immense.
His work coaching various youth sides gained recognition from the national body, as he was acknowledged as Youth Coach of the Year from the AFL North East Border.
‘‘Aside from his contribution to coaching, Daniel has been an active member of his local community through his involvement as a committee member at the Benalla All Blacks, which included two years as vice-president of the club,’’ Macri said.
‘‘Daniel has been a volunteer himself for a long period of time, and his work in Auskick and junior football participation complements his club experience and I’m sure he will be an asset to AFL Goulburn Murray and will be able to have an immediate impact in the role given his local knowledge and relationships.’’
