Police said the man was contacted about 9.30am Tuesday by someone claiming to be from the ATO and threatening arrest and legal action.
He was told the action would be dropped if he purchased a number of iTunes gift cards on their behalf.
Deniliquin Police Senior Constable Peter Joice said despite warnings, the man did not believe it was a scam until he had already handed over the details for some of the cards.
‘‘I am pleased to say he was warned at the point of sale, at a local supermarket, that it could be a scam,’’ Sen Const Joice said.
‘‘But when the man returned home he was contacted again and he provided a few of the card numbers.
‘‘After he started he thought something was not right and refused to give the rest of the numbers, hung up and contacted police.’’
Drugs charge
A 42 year-old Deniliquin man has been charged with alleged possession of a prohibited drug and ordered to appear in Deniliquin Court on February 5.
Police said a small bag of cannabis was found under the man’s foot when they spoke to him in west Deniliquin about 12.15pm Wednesday.
They allege he had dropped the bag as police approached him and another man on the footpath, and tried to conceal it.
Mid-range
A 61 year-old Mathoura man has had his licence suspending pending a court appearance on alleged drink driving charges.
Police allege the man returned a breath analysis reading of 0.124 on Wednesday night, after initially failing a roadside breath test in Lawrence St, Mathoura about 6.20pm.
He was charged with mid-range prescribed content of alcohol, and will appear in Deniliquin Court on February 5.
Cash, keys taken
Police are investigating the theft of a small amount of cash and two sets of keys from a car parked in west Deniliquin earlier this week.
The car was parked at 8pm Monday, and the items were discovered missing 6am on Tuesday.
The owner reportedly told police one of the car’s door cannot be locked.
Diesel siphoned
A sleeping truck driver disturbed someone trying to siphon diesel from his parked truck.
The driver had stopped on the side of the Conargo Rd near Deniliquin to get some rest when he was woken about 2.20am last Friday.
It caused the would-be diesel thief to flee, in a dark coloured dual cab ute.

Rods, reels missing
A number of fishing rods and reels have been stolen from a Deniliquin home.
Police said the fishing equipment had been kept in an open shed at the Edwardes St home.
The items were taken between 7pm on January 8 and 7.20am on January 11.
