Mulwala made the trip to Moama and were sluggish early as Moama came out ready to play.
Moama were playing the game on their terms early and if not for some great defensive work by Lachlan Rouell and James Wilson, Mulwala would have been much further behind than 1 goal at quarter time.
Brad Wilson and Jackson Gash began to get control of the ball out of the middle of the ground and Matthew Gorman snuck forward with a couple of goals in the second quarter to give Mulwala back the lead heading into half-time.
A dubious head knock in the 3rd quarter that saw Jack Sutherland stretchered off threw Mulwala’s forward line out of sync.
Flynn Fletcher and Dylan McNamara were working hard defensively and providing run off their opponents.
Sean Johns was also able to use his speed to break away from contests and propel Mulwala forward but the dependency on Dylan Robinson in the forward line was too easy for the Moama defense to pick off and repel the Mulwala attacks.
When the rain came down in the last quarter the game was always in the balance and Moama just made the most of their opportunities to come away with the win.
Reserves
Moama 14.9.93 defeated Mulwala 5.6.36.
Coming up against a strong Moama team was always going to be tough for the seconds who again called on numerous thirds players to finalize a team.
Andrew Miller and Matt McLachlan were working well in the middle of the ground as usual, but the Moama forwards were getting too much supply making life difficult for the backline.
Nathan Beasley, Cameron Carling and Isaac Pitches were working hard in defense and Josh Ednie and Sam Davies were providing some good link up through the middle of the ground as Mulwala were able to get some goals on the board in the second half but the damage had been done early.
Josh Eder and Levi Saunders up from the thirds played great games and Josh Ednie and Andy Miller worked hard all game and were rewarded with some late goals.
An even second half showed that the boys can still match it with the good teams and with some personnel back in the team won’t be far away from another win.
Goals: S. Davies 1, A. Miller 1, A. Maskell-Dunstan 1, K. Abikhair 1, J. Ednie 1.
Best: A. Miller, J. Ednie, S. Davies, I. Pitches, J. Eder, L. Saunders.
Thirds
Moama 9.17.71 defeated Mulwala 1.6.12.
In what most thought was going to be a close game, the Mulwala boys were not up to the challenge early.
Xavier Watson and Ethan Lay were working hard in defense and if not for themselves and Riley Mitchell all working well together, Mulwala would have been further behind.
Jeremy Bramich got the Lions first goal in the second quarter from some good work up the ground from Dillon Kirchen and Mulwala were starting to get more of the ball through Jett Peters and Josh Eder around the middle of the ground.
Moama continued to surge forward in the second half and Xavier Watson playing his best game for the year was a shining light in an otherwise dreary game.
Goals: J. Bramich 1.
Best: X. Watson, D. Kirchen, O. Watson, E. Lay, J. Bramich, R. Mitchell.
Fourths
Moama 6.10.46 defeated Mulwala 2.1.13.
The Fourths began the game as though they had walked all the way to Moama from Mulwala before the game.
After convincingly beating Moama in the first encounter, the young Moama team started the game with the determination to win the football that Mulwala usually possess.
A scoreless first half by Mulwala for the first time this season saw Moama take a convincing lead as the backline led by Maiko Leith, Archie Purtle and Jace Gove playing his 50th game for the club were under constant pressure.
Kade Sullivan was good down back and midfielders Van Kreeck and Beau Sissons, also playing his 50th game, were forced deep into the defense to assist with the constant Moama attacks.
A 6-goal lead to Moama at 3 quarter time and coach Kreeck asked for a bit more from his players and they responded with a couple of quick goals through Ollie Nagle and some good work from Luke Abikhair but it was all too little too late and the boys went down in a loss they had to have.
Goals: O. Nagle 2.
Best: V. Kreeck, M. Leith, A. Purtle, B. Sissons, L. Abikhair, O. Nagle.
