At Twin Rivers Uncle Rick Ronnan conducted a smoking ceremony after students led an assembly on recognising the importance of Reconciliation Week and smoking ceremonies.
‘‘The week serves as a chance for us to come together as a school community and ensure we respect everyone equally,’’ Twin Rivers acting principal Graeme Hodgens said.
‘‘We are a new school living the values of resilience, respect and inclusion and that is what Reconciliation Week is all about.’’
At Echuca East Primary School the students took part in a morning tea, with principal Lyn Strachan leading the assembly.
‘‘National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared history, culture, achievements and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation, grounded in truth,’’ she said.
‘‘I believe this year’s theme ‘grounded in truth: walk together with courage’ captures the essence of what we are working toward through our Marrung: Aboriginal Education Plan 2016-2026 which aims to ensure that all Koorie Victorians achieve their learning aspirations.
‘‘I’m proud to work at Echuca East Primary School, where we work in strong partnerships with our Koorie workforce, Koorie engagement support officers and families to ensure we include Aboriginal perspectives into all curriculum areas and provide opportunities for our students to share and showcase their cultures.
‘‘And to support our students to feel strong in and connected to their cultural identity.’’
